Granite Worktops - The Facts - Advice and Tips
Here at Granite Care Limited we have a depth of knowledge that spans over 50 years. We are the 3rd generation of stonemasons in the family, and can draw from our wealth of experience and knowledge to give you, our customers the facts on Granite Worktops.
Are Granite Worktops hard? Yes they are very hard, and difficult to damage, however all things hards are often brittle, therefore, installation is the danger time. Once Granite Worktops are fitted it is extremely difficult to damage them.
Are Granite Worktops prone to staining? No. It is difficult to stain dark granite. Often sealing dark granites can have an adverse effect, and stains or milky clouds, can appear where the integrity of the sealant, has been compromised. We do not recommend sealing Absolute Black Granite, or Star Galaxy Granite. We do recommend sealing all lighter coloured granites as they will soak in the sealant, and this will give a lasting protection. Ask your supplier for specifics on which granites to seal.
How long will Granite Worktops Last? The simple answer is a lifetime. Granite is one of the hardest surfaces known to man. During normal working conditions, it will never ever wear out.
How many colours are available. See our website colour pallette for current numbers of Granite Colours
What maintenance is required with Granite Worktops? Simply wipe with a multi surface cleaner, preferably anti-bacterial, then dry with kitchen roll. Periodic sealing with Akemi Care kit, if required and as directed.

How Do You Draw Oil, Grease, Fat Stains Out of Granite?
Got a Stain on your Granite that will not budge? Granite Care has the answer for you.
Granite is a Natural, Hardwearing material and with a Polished Surface and correct Maintenance and Sealing will not draw a lot of liquid into its surface which will stain. Although, if you have spilled something containing Oil such as Grease or Fat or Cooking Oil, and you leave it on the Granite Worktop Surface for a longated period, Grease can seep and dissolve into the stone and a Dark Oil-Based Stain Mark will appear.
Option 1:
The first step is to try and get rid and try and lift the Stain as soon as possible. Usually, stains can be avoided if the Worktop Surface is cleaned with a mild cleaning product.
If this does not work and the Stain will still not budge, do not despair. The advice that any Granite Worktop Manufacturer or Fabricator will give to you will always be the same. Do Not use any Acidic Solutions or Cleaners to try and remove the stain. These include vinegar and lemon juice. Products that are Acidic can harm the Sealant holding your Worktops in place and the finish on the Granite Surface.
Option 2:
Your next option is to try a damp cloth with a tiny drop of bleach and hot water mixture. Gently massage this into the stain. You should see the Stain working its way out. After rubbing this into the stain, dry with a dry microfibre cloth (available from must supermarkets) and buff until the surface is evenly polished. You should now see that the stain is gone. If not, you have a Stubborn Stain and need to try the next method.
Option 3:
The next method is for very stubborn stains. A Poultice is the best option. A Poultice is made up of Powdered Whiting (which can be bought from your local DIY Store) and Hydrogen Peroxide. After purchasing these two products, you can now make a Poutlice. How to do this can be seen here. This removes stubborn stains, so you should have no problem. If this still does not work, try the next option.
Option 4:
You can try two Stain Removing Products:
The first one that Granite Care can supply to you is Lithofin Stain Away. This is a liquid product that gets rid of oil and grease stains. This should work on your Stain.
The other option is Bar Keepers Friend. This can be seen below.

This product is available from most supermarkets. Its motto is “Cleans where others Fail”. This is a powdered solution that you rub onto the Stain.
Your Stain should hopefully have disappeared.
